Greenland Ice Hotel
To check availability and make a booking please call Robert Broad Travel on 01543 258631

Please note: The Ice Igloo in Greenland will not be built for the 2004/2005 season.  We will update this page as soon as we receive further information.  You can still book the package as stated below but the optional one night in the ice igloo will be unavailable.

Greenland is a place like no other – a vast remote wilderness that offers visitors a true sense of adventure. Our 6 night break which includes 2 nights in ‘wonderful, wonderful’ Copenhagen, gives you the opportunity to visit a real arctic igloo, built from blocks of packed ice and snow and for a little
extra, you can do something that many people only dream about and actually sleep there.

How to book

During your time in Greenland, you’ll stay in Kangerlussuaq, meaning ‘long fjord’. The fjord cuts 185km from the west coast through one of Greenland’s most beautiful regions. This small
community, surrounded by the magnificence of the great reenlandic outdoors is surprisingly, blessed with some of the most stable weather in the arctic region. Although at times
extremely cold, in the region of - 30°C, it is usually a very ‘dry’ cold and so long as equipped with suitable clothing, you’ll find it easy to adapt.

The climate helps to make this an ideal destination for winter activities, of which there is an excellent selection. Of course husky sledging and snowmobiling feature but you’ll also get the opportunity to try a Musk Ox Safari to observe these noble creatures at close quarters and with luck, spot reindeer and arctic foxes too. The area is also amongst
the best places in the arctic for sightings of the northern lights and a special observatory has been built just
outside of town - fantastic sightings are not uncommon here. Choose to stay in either Hotel Kangerlussuaq at the airport just out of town or at the Musk Ox Inn on the edge of the community. Although amenities and meal arrangements differ, both hotels offer cosy, comfortable accommodation.

The Igloo Hotel, with only 4 igloo bedrooms is the smallest of all the ‘ice hotels’ we feature. However with it’s elegant ice sculptures and igloo ice bar, serving some mouth numbing cocktails, it lacks none of the atmosphere of its larger more illustrious cousins. It may also hold the record for lowest interior temperature
at between -10° and -15°C but the ‘cocoon-like’ polar sleeping bags and covering of musk ox pelts ensure a
snug night.

Now in its 6th year, this Igloo Hotel was originally constructed with the help of the ice technicians from Jukkasjarvi in Sweden. But now Greenlandic sculptors and designers are constantly developing new ideas for both the hotel and the remarkable sculptures that form the avenue leading up to its entrance.

One of the highly recommended optional excursions is the exhilarating drive up to and along part of the impressive inland ice cap. Greenland’s ice cap covers an area 14 times the size of England – not a lot of people know that!

The trip to Kangerlussuaq necessitates travelling via Copenhagen and the time you have in Scandinavia’s largest city and Denmark’s capital, contrasts sharply with the remoteness of Greenland. However, when you see this vibrant place has such a rich history, glorious architecture, a wealth of shops, eateries and attractions set against a waterside backdrop, you may well wish to extend your stay – call us for details or how to add extra nights in Greenland.

HOTEL KANGERLUSSUAQ – this 3 star hotel has no communal area exclusive to the hotel but the 85 rooms are well appointed with private bathroom, TV, telephone and minibar. The airport building contains an
attractive à la carte restaurant, noted as one of the best in Greenland. The hotel has its own café and our guests stay on a breakfast basis.

MUSK OX INN – facilities are shared and the bedrooms are small but comfortable. The dining/living room area provides guests with all meals and on one evening during your stay, you’ll be treated to a Greenlandic
barbeque in a tepee. The musk ox and reindeer steaks do not make this a suitable trip for vegetarians

IGLOO HOTEL – igloos have ice beds, covered in musk ox skins and polar sleeping bags.

Day 1 morning flight from London Heathrow to Copenhagen. Transfer to a hotel in the city centre for an overnight stay. Afternoon at leisure to explore this wonderful city.

Day 2 after breakfast, transfer to the airport for the morning flight to Kangerlussuaq and onwards to your choice of hotel.

Days 3-5 days free to enjoy optional excursions including dog sledging, snowmobiling, a musk ox safari and a drive to the ice cap. Visit the fascinating Igloo Hotel for an additional cost of around £9 – or stay overnight? - UNAVAILABLE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Day 6 after breakfast, take a late morning flight from Kangerlussuaq to Copenhagen and transfer to a central
hotel for an overnight stay. Rest of the day to explore the city. Day 7 morning at leisure in Copenhagen before transferring to the airport for return flight to the UK.

(prices quoted are per person unless otherwise stated)

HUSKY SLEDGING 2 hours £95 4 hours £122 With the traditional Greenlandic way of harnessing a team of dogs, in a fan shape rather than in-line, enjoy the thrill of dog sledging. On the longer trip, head on to the frozen Kangerlussuaq fjord or up to Lake Ferguson.

NORTHERN LIGHTS EXCURSION 2 hours £45 Between October and April, join this evening minibus trip out into the wide-open spaces around town and enjoy a display of the northern lights as nature intended.

TRIP TO THE ICE CAP 4-5 hours £61 Take an extraordinary trip to the ice cap by 4WD.
