As seen on Channel 5's mega builders...

About the documentary...
In the early spring of 1990, an exhibition of ice
sculptures took place in a bespoke igloo in the village of Jukkasjärvi, high up
in the north of Sweden, well within the Arctic Circle.
One night, with no rooms available to rent in the village, several visitors
asked if they could stay in the exhibition hall. Bedding down in sleeping bags
on reindeer skins, these people were to become the first ever guests of ICEHOTEL.
Over two decades later, ICEHOTEL has reappeared every year, and now it has
evolved from a simple igloo to a sophisticated, sculpted set of suites, rooms,
bars and even a chapel taking up over 6,000 square metres. It has rightly been
established as one of the Seven Wonders of Sweden. But how do you build it?
Building the world’s largest structure of snow and ice is a mega challenge of
towering proportions. Anything can go wrong. And often it does. This programme
follows artistic director Ake Larson and architect Arne Bergh, as they turn
30,000 tons of snow and 10,000 tons of ice into the coolest place to stay on the
planet.
You might think they could rely on cold weather, at least. But even in winter,
200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, unseasonal warm weather can take a
hold. Two weeks into the six-week building project, the guys are hit by a
relative heatwave. It’s too warm to make snow, too warm to continue building
rooms!
But Ake and Arne’s deadline is fixed. Soon, guests who’ve paid deposits will
arrive to check into a hotel that Ake and Arne haven’t built yet! Will the warm
spell last? Will this be the first time nature defeats Ake and Arne? Or will it
turn cold again in time for construction crews to make one final push to get the
ICEHOTEL finished on time?
